ZONE

official website: http://www.sonymusic.co.jp/Music/Info/ZONE/

A four person, all female band started by Studio Runtime. ZONE was the first of a new genre known as "bandol", a combination of band and idol. They released their first single in 1999 called "believe in love." In 2002, they became the winners of the the Japan Gold Disk New Artist of the Year. They are best remembered by their hit single "Kimi ga kureta mono ~ Secret Base."

ZONE will forever remain in my memories as the band that got me started on Japanese music when I unexpectedly happened across a video of their "Secret Base" performance at Kouhaku. Since then, I have always been impressed with their music and lyrics (accredited to composer Norihiko Machida), Miyu's spectacular vocals, their distinct and unique combination of personalities, and ability to play instruments and just rock out.

Lyrics:
ima kimi ga tatte iru basho wa
the place where you are standing now

massugu ni tsuzuita tatta ichido dake no
continues straight ahead

nagai tabi e no hon no hajimari
and is only the beginning of this one and only long journey

kazoekirenai yume wo kakaeta bokura nanimo wakaranakute
countless dreams we carried in our arms not knowing anything

kitto itsumo no you ni mirai wo mukaeru yo
surely, like always we met the world to come

honto no kimochi uchiakete
frankly speaking our true feelings

tooi tooi sora no aosa wo
out of a hundred colors

hyaku iro no naka kara hitotsu erande
choosing a single one; the blue of the far away and distant sky

masshiro na kono kyanpasu ni
if I sketch out everything in my heart and spread it

kokoro no naka wo zenbu hirogete egaitara
onto this pure white canvas

atarashii jibun mitsukaru yo ne
I will find a new "me", won't I?

kaze no hajimari kumo no yukisaki dare mo oshite moraenai koto
the onset of the wind and the whereabouts of the clouds are things nobody can tell us

itsuka meguriaeru kakegae no nai mono
someday, we happen upon them, those irreplaceable things

tabun sore wa takara mono
perhaps those are the things we treasure

omoikkiri zensokuryoku de
with everything I can muster

kakedashita kodou kanjiteru
I make haste and run; my heart beating rapidly

seiippai shinkokyuu shite
and taking a deep breath

sora wo miageta nara
if I looked up at the sky

kirei na hikoukigumo
I would see a beautiful vapor trail

hontou no kimi ga daisuki da yo ne
I loved the true you, didn't I?

tooi tooi sora no aosa wo
the blueness of the distant, distant sky

kimi no koto terashite ouen suru
shines upon you and will cheer you onward

masshiro na kono kyanpasu ni
if I sketch out everything in my heart and spread it

kokoro no naka wo zenbu hirogete egaitara
onto this pure white canvas

atarashii jibun mitsukaru yo ne
I will find a new "me", won't I?

itsudatte wasurezu ni omotte iru
always I will think of you and I won't forget

ima boku ga fumidasu basho wa
now, the place where you step forward

massugu ni tsuzuita tatta ichido dake no
continues straight ahead

nagai tabi e no hon no hajimari
and is only the beginning of this one and only long journey

Translation Notes:
イツダッテ 忘レズニ 想ッテイル is probably represented by a more literal translation of "always when I won't forget you, I remember". It just doesn't sound so coherent this way.
